Chabaso Bike Riders Hit the Road
for Smilow Cancer Hospital

NEW HAVEN, CONN.  (Sept. 2, 2011)  -- At least fifteen Team Chabaso bike riders are slated to test their mettle along with some of the best peddlers in Connecticut on Saturday, September 10th, when they join the first annual “Closer to Free” Bike Ride Fundraiser outside Yale Bowl for the benefit of the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. The goal of the ride is three-fold: to raise money for cancer-cure research, raise awareness of better cancer care throughout Connecticut, and for voluntary riders to test their endurance in pursuit of pure cycling enjoyment.

Team Chabaso is sponsored by Chabaso Bread Company, a popular New Haven artisan bakery. The team is captained by Chabaso’s founder and CEO Charlie Negaro, an avid cyclist. The team will traverse the scenic Connecticut coastline through twelve towns on a 100-mile route and back to the Yale Bowl complex where riders, volunteers and the public are invited to a celebration finale featuring refreshments and entertainment.

Chabaso will donate hundreds of loaves of bread to the post ride gathering. In addition, ride participants will enjoy plentiful samples of whole grain breads, a perfectly healthful and delicious accompaniment to the nutritional demands of competitive cycling both during and after what will be a challenging event for many riders.

Chabaso Bakery, a founding member of America’s Whole Grain Council, is one of the most celebrated artisan bakeries in the United States. A family-owned business founded in New Haven, they produce and distribute over two-dozen varieties of breads and rolls to fine, small food stores and major supermarket chains throughout New England, New Jersey, New York, and along the eastern seaboard.
